"Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi" He successfully performs the first robotic breast reconstruction surgery

ABU DHABI, 21st January, 2017 (WAM) – Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi has successfully performed the first breast reconstruction surgery of its kind in the country using the robot-assisted deep inferior abdominal perforating artery flap (DIEP) technique, for a breast cancer survivor who had previously undergone a mastectomy.
This advanced surgical procedure combines robotic surgery technology with specialized expertise in microsurgery, reflecting Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi’s commitment to employing the latest medical innovations to achieve the best treatment outcomes for patients, and to provide natural and less invasive options for breast cancer survivors who desire breast reconstruction.
By relying on robotic technology, the medical team was able to take tissues from the abdominal area through small incisions while preserving the integrity of the muscles and surrounding tissues, then transfer them to reshape the breast naturally using the patient’s own tissues, benefiting from three-dimensional imaging and high-precision robotic tools that allowed the blood vessels in the abdomen to be separated with a higher degree of accuracy and safety, which contributed to reducing damage to the abdominal wall, and significantly helped speed up the patient’s recovery and reduce pain after surgery.
Dr. Georges Pascal Habre, CEO of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, said that this surgical achievement reflects the advanced level of the healthcare system in the Emirates, stressing that the hospital combines global expertise and the latest medical technologies to provide care that was previously only available outside the country, and that performing the first surgery in the Emirates to reconstruct breasts using the “DIEP” technology with the assistance of a robot embodies the extent of the progress achieved and the commitment to pushing the boundaries of medical innovation in Abu Dhabi.
For his part, Dr. Rafi Guronian, a consultant at the Institute of Integrated Surgical Specialties and head of the Department of Plastic Surgery at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, confirmed that robot-assisted breast reconstruction allows for higher accuracy and reduces the side effects associated with traditional surgery using the “DIEP” technique. He explained that the surgery was completed successfully without complications, and represents the future of reconstruction surgeries because of the less invasive solutions it provides that reduce pain, abdominal problems, and the recovery period, pointing out that its implementation for the first time in the UAE is an important step in this field.
