The Venezuelan National Assembly takes a first step towards adopting a general amnesty law

Today, Venezuela took the first step towards adopting a general amnesty law, the text of which received unanimous approval during the first reading, and its provisions will be discussed in detail on Tuesday.
Under pressure from Washington, acting Venezuelan President Delcy Rodriguez pledged on January 30 to issue an amnesty law, less than a month after she took power following the United States’ overthrow of Nicolas Maduro. The legislative text would allow the release of all political detainees and drop prosecutions against them.
