The UAE consolidates its leadership in protecting children digitally

Abu Dhabi, February 10, 2017 – The UAE continues to consolidate its global leadership position in the field of child protection and the promotion of digital safety through an integrated system of laws, legislation and national initiatives, coinciding with World Safer Internet Day 2026 and the “Year of the Family” in the country.

The UAE’s celebration of World Safe Internet Day confirms its continued commitment to strengthening cooperation between government and private agencies and educational institutions and working to establish a safe and responsible digital culture that supports the quality of life of children and families and contributes to preparing a digital generation capable of effectively contributing to the national development process.

The efforts embody the UAE’s forward-looking vision, which places people and families at the top of its development priorities and adopts a balanced approach that combines accelerating digital transformation, supporting innovation and advanced technology, especially in the fields of artificial intelligence, and providing a safe digital environment that protects children and takes into account their developmental and cognitive needs.

The UAE government issued a federal decree law regarding digital safety for children, which constituted an integrated legislative framework aimed at protecting children from digital risks, encouraging the safe and responsible use of technology, and setting clear controls that keep pace with the rapid developments in the digital world, taking into account different age groups and the specific stages of development within the state’s vision aimed at protecting and enhancing the quality of children’s lives.

Faisal Al Shammari, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Emirates Child Protection Society, stressed that World Safer Internet Day represents an important milestone in enhancing societal awareness of the importance of protecting children in the digital space, praising the proactive approach taken by the UAE in this field.

He said that the UAE has succeeded in providing a pioneering model that combines support for innovation and advanced technology, especially artificial intelligence, with the establishment of an integrated system for child protection, which contributes to building a digitally aware generation capable of making positive use of modern technologies, in line with the country’s vision of enhancing the quality of life of children and families.

The UAE attaches great importance to supporting and empowering young people with knowledge and modern technical tools and directing them towards the optimal use of technology in line with the country’s vision of building a cohesive and digitally secure society.

It also highlights the country’s pioneering role in supporting innovation and advanced technology, especially in the field of artificial intelligence, by employing these technologies to develop smart solutions that contribute to monitoring digital risks, strengthening protection systems, and raising the level of safety on digital platforms directed to children and young people, in keeping with global best practices.

It is worth noting that World Safer Internet Day falls on the second Tuesday of February every year, and aims to promote a safer and better Internet for everyone, especially children, by raising awareness of online risks such as cyberbullying and fraud, and promoting the responsible use of technology. This year, it is held on February 10 with a focus on “Smart Technology and Safe Choices – Exploring the Safe and Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence.”
