Jobs in major Korean companies will decrease by 0.4% in 2025

SEOUL, February 15, 2025 – Industrial data showed on Sunday that employment in the 476 largest companies in South Korea in 2025 fell by 0.4% from the previous year; The increase recorded by Korean cosmetics and semiconductor companies was offset by a decline in employment in other sectors.
The total number of workers in these companies reached 1 million, 625,526 workers at the end of December, down from 1 million, 632,255 workers in the previous year, according to data collected by the company “CEO Score”, which specializes in tracking the performance of companies. These numbers include 476 companies that participated in a survey that included the country’s 500 largest companies in terms of sales.
Of the participating companies, 222, or 46.6%, reported an increase in employment last year, although more than 70% of those companies added less than 100 workers.
CJ Olive Young Company, the retail and distribution arm of the CJ Group, recorded the largest increase, as it employed 2,518 employees, an increase of 21% over the previous year, followed by SK Hynix, which works in the electronic chip industry, which added 2,188 workers, an increase of 6.9% on an annual basis.
CEO Score said that CJ Olive Young expanded its store network and increased hiring to meet strong demand for Korean cosmetics products, and SK Hynix increased the number of employees in manufacturing facilities and research and development centers amid a recovery in the semiconductor cycle.
In contrast, 249 companies, or 52.3%, reported a decrease in employment, while 5 companies saw no change.
The data showed that employment at LG Electronics, Emart, Lotte Shopping, and Hyundai Motor decreased by more than a thousand jobs last year.
