Life imprisonment for the former South Korean president

Yesterday, former South Korean President Yoon Suk-yul was sentenced to life imprisonment for declaring martial law for a brief period in late 2024. Judge Ji Gui-yeon of the Seoul Central Court said during his reading of the ruling: “We sentence Yoon to life imprisonment” for his conviction for leading a rebellion. Thus, the former conservative leader escaped the death penalty requested by the prosecution, and in a surprise speech, on the evening of December 3, 2024, Yoon Suk-yol announced Martial law was imposed, and the army was ordered to storm the National Assembly, but a sufficient number of representatives were able to enter the hall, which was surrounded by soldiers, and they issued a resolution against this seizure of power, which forced the then president to retreat.
