‘Grey’s Anatomy’ star Eric Dane dies at 53

Eric Dane, known for his roles in the TV hit series ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and ‘Euphoria’, has died at age 53 after an intense battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

“With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS,” read a statement from his family.

The actor spent his last few days “surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world,” according to the statement. He was married to actress and model Rebecca Gayheart, with whom he had his two children.

The American actor revealed he was diagnosed with ALS in April 2025, spending the last few months raising awareness on the motor neuron disease (MND), also described as Lou Gehrig’s disease. 

“Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight,” the statement continued.

Dane was best known for his roles as Dr. Mark Sloan in the medical drama series Grey’s Anatomy and Cal Jacobs in HBO Max’s psychological teen drama Euphoria.

He also played Jason Dean in the fantasy drama series Charmed, and Captain Tom Chandler in the action drama show The Last Ship, while appearing in films such as Marley & Me, Valentine’s Day, and Burlesque.
