With a magnitude of 7.1, a severe earthquake strikes off the Malaysian state of Sabah

Hit at 7.1 degrees early Monday (local time) off on the island of Borneo, according to what was reported by the American Institute of Geophysics.
The epicenter of the earthquake was located less than 100 kilometers (62 miles) northeast of the state capital, Kota Kinabalu, at a depth of approximately 619.8 kilometers, according to the same source.

The earthquake occurred at 12.57 Monday (16.57 GMT Sunday), and the American Institute reported that the possibility of injuries or damage is limited, The US Tsunami Warning Center did not issue any warning, attributing this to the depth of the epicenter.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department said that it would continue to monitor the situation closely, estimating the strength of the earthquake at 6.8 degrees.
It added that residents of the western coast of Sabah state and others in areas of Sarawak state felt earthquakes.
