Maqsoud Cruz was appointed Chairman of the International Board of Directors of the Hedayah Centre

ABU DHABI, 25 February, 2017 (WAM) – The Abu Dhabi-based Hedayah International Center for Excellence in Combating Extremism and Violent Extremism announced the appointment of His Excellency Maqsoud Cruz, the Minister of Foreign Affairs’ Envoy to Combating Extremism and Terrorism, as Chairman of the International Board of Directors, which includes members from 12 countries, with the presidency of the Council being the headquartered country.

His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, inaugurated the “Hedayah Center” on December 14, 2012. It is an independent international research and applied institution and an initiative emanating from the Global Counter-Terrorism Forum. The Center works within a framework of multilateral partnerships with international organizations and institutions, in addition to cooperating with an elite group of international experts with the aim of deepening understanding and exchanging best practices in order to combat extremism in all its forms and manifestations, which includes programs related to strengthening the role of the family in Preventing extremism, the role of education in protecting against extremist ideas, mentally fortifying young people in the field of cyberspace and social media platforms and dismantling extremist discourse, the role of artificial intelligence and technology in combating extremism, supporting national strategies for prevention and combating extremism, supporting countries in their national efforts in the rehabilitation and integration of those returning from conflict areas, and supporting community police efforts.

His Excellency Maqsoud Cruz served as the first Executive Director of the Hedayah Center from its founding in 2012 until 2019. He contributed to consolidating the center’s global position as the first independent international institution specialized in combining research and application in the field of combating extremism in all its forms, through dialogue programs, capacity building, and research at the regional and international levels.
