A delegation from the United Kingdom reviews the country’s nuclear emergency preparedness system

Abu Dhabi, February 25 / WAM / The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation hosted a delegation from the Young Generation Network affiliated with the Nuclear Institute in the United Kingdom, as part of the first technical visit by the network that focused on the system of preparedness and response to nuclear and radiological emergencies in the UAE.

During the visit, the delegation was briefed on the Authority’s role as the independent nuclear regulatory body in the country responsible for protecting the public and the environment.

The program included a presentation of the Authority’s tasks in the areas of preparedness and response to nuclear and radiological emergencies, the national emergency management framework, in addition to the tools, systems and oversight functions that support effective decision-making during emergency situations.

The visit also included a tour of the Authority’s Emergency Operations Center, where participants learned about its capabilities in nuclear assessment, radiation monitoring, and communications management.

The center enables the Authority to coordinate response efforts with national agencies and international partners, including the International Atomic Energy Agency, during nuclear and radiological emergencies.

Mohammed Al Marzouqi, Director of Emergency Preparedness and Response at the Authority, said that communication with the next generation of specialists in the nuclear field is an essential element for exchanging the UAE’s experiences in preparedness for nuclear and radiological emergencies, and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the sector at the national and international levels.

It is noteworthy that the Young Generation Network of the Nuclear Institute in the United Kingdom has been operating for more than 25 years, and includes more than 2,000 members, and aims to support professionals in the early stages of their careers by enhancing communication, collaboration and professional development at the level of the nuclear sector in the United Kingdom and globally.

The Authority’s Emergency Operations Center, which was opened in 2019, plays a pivotal role in implementing national exercises and exercises for nuclear and radiological emergencies, in addition to hosting international activities, including the International Atomic Energy Agency’s “CONFEX-3” exercise, which witnessed the participation of 75 countries and 12 international organizations, and a number of missions to review preparedness for nuclear and radiological emergencies.
