A Russian gas tanker sank off Libya…and Moscow accuses Kyiv


A Russian ship carrying LNG in The Mediterranean Sea, between Libya and Malta, following explosions of unknown origin on Tuesday evening, but Moscow accused The Ukrainian Navy attacked.

The Libyan Ports and Maritime Transport Authority said on Wednesday that it had received a distress call from the Arctic Metagas oil tanker on Tuesday evening.

It added that the tanker "It was exposed to explosions followed by a massive fire that led to its complete sinking"

But the Russian Ministry of Transport said that the attack on the tanker Arctic Metagas was carried out from the Libyan coast by naval craft of the Ukrainian Navy, adding that the ship that was loaded set off from the port of Murmansk in northern Russia.

The Russian Ministry confirmed the survival of all 30 crew members. For its part, the Libyan Ports Authority indicated that the tanker was carrying 62 thousand tons. A meter of liquefied gas on its way to the Port of Port Said in Egypt.

The Port Authority said that the cargo ship Repext, heading to the port of Benghazi in the east of the country, assisted in the rescue operations of the crew of the Russian tanker.

The Authority drew attention to three maritime warnings related to the danger of sailing in the area where the tanker sank, in addition to an environmental danger represented by severe pollution, in addition to security risks, and that it is not permitted to approach the area where the tanker sank.
