FAO: The situation in the Middle East is putting pressure on global supply chains

Warned Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East during 2026 imposes additional pressures on fragile agricultural and food systems and Global supply chains, which threatens the availability, accessibility and affordability of food.
In the opening speech of the 38th session of the FAO Regional Conference for the Near East in Rome, FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu stressed the need to recognize the utmost importance of maintaining trade flows and ensuring everyone’s access to sufficient food, especially in countries that depend on imports.

Rising energy prices

Dongyu warned that the major disruptions currently taking place in food production systems Its trade and distribution across the region has been exacerbated by global repercussions, including rising energy prices and disruptions in fertilizer markets, leading to increased production costs and negatively impacting agricultural productivity, both inside and outside the region.
