Fuel distribution was halted in Tehran after strikes on oil sites
Fuel distribution in Tehran stopped “temporarily,” according to what an Iranian official announced on Sunday, after American and Israeli raids overnight targeted four oil warehouses and a logistics site used to transport petroleum products in the Iranian capital and its environs, and led to the deaths of four people.
The official IRNA news agency quoted Tehran Governor Mohammad Sadiq Motamedian as saying, “Due to the damage to the fuel supply network, distribution has been temporarily halted.”
Director General of the National Iranian Oil Products Distribution Company, Karamat Vais Karmi, told state television, “Last night, the aircraft targeted four oil warehouses and a center for transporting oil products in central Tehran and Alborz.”
Smoke rising from the fires resulting from these strikes spread over Tehran at night, and created a black cloud that covered the sky in the morning, according to AFP journalists.
Iranian environmental agencies called on residents to stay in their homes to avoid inhaling smoke and subsequently being exposed to respiratory problems and other health risks.
The Iranian Red Crescent explained that “large amounts of toxic hydrocarbons, sulfur and nitrogen oxides” were emitted from the outbreak of fires, while residents reported a strong burning smell.
The non-governmental organization warned in a statement that any rain that might fall “will be very dangerous and very acidic,” warning of the risk of skin burns and serious lung damage.
