The UAE welcomes the Security Council’s adoption of a resolution condemning in the strongest terms the Iranian attacks

New York, 12 March / WAM / The United Arab Emirates welcomed the adoption of Security Council Resolution 2817, which condemns in the strongest terms the treacherous missile and drone attacks launched by the Islamic Republic of Iran against the UAE, the Gulf Cooperation Council countries and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, and demands that Iran immediately stop these attacks.
The Kingdom of Bahrain led this decision on behalf of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries and Jordan, and the UAE expresses its sincere appreciation to the Kingdom of Bahrain for its leadership role in moving forward with this decision.
Resolution 2817 states that these actions constitute a violation of international law and a serious threat to international peace and security. The resolution calls on Iran to immediately and unconditionally stop any provocations or threats directed at neighboring countries, including through its agents in the region. The resolution also affirms the right to self-defense in response to Iranian attacks in accordance with Article 51 of the United Nations Charter.
The resolution calls on Iran to fully comply with its obligations under international law, particularly with regard to the protection of civilians and civilian objects in armed conflicts, and to refrain from any threats or actions that would undermine regional stability, freedom of navigation, and global economic security.
The adoption of this resolution comes in the wake of several letters submitted on behalf of the UAE and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries to both the President of the Security Council and the Secretary-General of the United Nations, which reviewed the scale of the Iranian attacks that targeted the UAE and the region and their repercussions. It also called on the international community, including the Security Council, to take urgent and decisive measures to confront them. Iran bears full responsibility for all damage and losses suffered by the affected countries as a result of its illegal armed attacks.
His Excellency Ambassador Mohammed Abu Shehab, Permanent Representative of the United Arab Emirates to the United Nations, welcomed the adoption of the resolution, saying: The adoption of this resolution, which was co-sponsored by 135 member states of the United Nations, sends a clear and unified message that the international community will not tolerate attacks on the sovereignty of states or the deliberate targeting of civilians and vital infrastructure.
His Excellency added: The UAE thanks the Security Council for standing by the government and people of the UAE and the peoples of the region in the current circumstances, and we affirm our commitment to continue working with the United Nations and our international partners to preserve the principles of international law, enhance stability, and prevent further escalation in our region.
The UAE reaffirms its inherent right to self-defense, individually or collectively, in accordance with Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, and to take all necessary measures, in accordance with the principles of international law, to defend its lands, people and vital facilities in the face of any attack or threat that affects its security and territorial integrity.
The UAE stresses its commitment to continuing its efforts within the framework of the United Nations to address these violations, prevent their recurrence, and maintain international peace and security.
