An American move to form an international coalition to escort ships in the Strait of Hormuz

The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday that the administration of US President Donald Trump intends to announce this week the agreement of several countries to form a coalition to escort ships through the Strait of Hormuz. The newspaper added that the expected coalition includes several countries, and will carry out escort operations for ships in the Strait of Hormuz, according to American officials.

The newspaper indicated that discussions regarding the coalition are still ongoing about whether operations will begin before or after the end of the ongoing military actions.

The Financial Times newspaper, quoting an official, reported that European Union foreign ministers would discuss the possibility of expanding the scope of the bloc’s Aspids naval mission to the Strait of Hormuz.

The newspaper quoted the official as saying that a joint naval mission between the European Union and the United Nations to ensure safe passage “seems more likely.”

On Saturday, US President Donald Trump urged a number of countries to send warships to secure the Strait of Hormuz.

The US President wrote on his “Truth Social” platform, “Several countries will send warships, in cooperation with the United States, to keep the strait open and safe.”

He continued: “We hope that China, France, Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and other countries will take the initiative to send ships to the region so that the Strait of Hormuz is no longer threatened by a headless country.”

Trump later stressed, “The countries of the world that receive oil through the Strait of Hormuz should take charge of this corridor, and we will provide great assistance.”
