The European Parliament gives a green light to implement the trade agreement with America

Brussels, March 19, 2017 – The International Trade Committee of the European Parliament today gave a preliminary green light to implement the trade agreement concluded in the summer of 2025 between the European Union and the United States, in a step that represents tangible progress after months of stagnation that marred the process of European ratification of the agreement.

Members of the relevant parliamentary committee approved the plan to implement the agreement, including the European Union’s commitment to cancel customs duties imposed on imports of a number of American products, in accordance with the terms of the agreement signed with Washington, while including a package of guarantees and preventive measures to protect European markets.

In return, the United States pledged to reduce customs duties imposed on the majority of European exports to a ceiling not exceeding 15%, a level much lower than the 30% that US President Donald Trump had previously suggested during the negotiation stages.

This step is seen as a prelude to the final adoption of the agreement during the coming period, in the event that the rest of the legislative procedures are completed within the European Union institutions, amid anticipation of the extent of its impact on trade exchange between the two sides.
