Dubai aims to create 1,000 kilometers of pedestrian and bicycle paths by 2030

The Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai has completed 13 bicycle paths out of 15 paths it is implementing with a total length of 162 km, covering various regions of the emirate, as part of a comprehensive plan to raise the total length of bicycle paths to 1,000 km by 2030, in parallel with the implementation of pedestrian and bicycle bridges that are considered the largest in the emirate, including bridges on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, Dubai – Al Ain, Sheikh Zayed and Al Khail streets, to enhance Connecting paths and improving the flow of movement.
Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority, confirmed that the Authority’s expansion in the implementation of bicycle and pedestrian paths and bridges comes as a translation of the directives of the wise leadership to raise the level of traffic safety and provide a safe and sustainable transportation environment for all road users, transform Dubai into a city friendly to pedestrians and bicycles, and enhance the quality of life in the city to achieve happiness for the residents and visitors of the city of Dubai, as the existing bicycle paths that are planned to be implemented in the future provide a network linking residential areas in the Emirate of Dubai to the main attractions and mass transit stations. To encourage the residents of the emirate to use bicycles and sustainable individual means of transportation for first and last mile trips.
He pointed out that the selection of the path locations was based on careful field studies, which took into account population density, and achieving integration between land uses, tourist and economic attractions, and mass transit stations, with the aim of enhancing the flow of traffic and facilitating the movement of road users, including pedestrians and bicycles, on the streets in a safe manner.
He added that Dubai’s entry into the list of the top 100 bicycle-friendly cities in the world, according to the Copenhagen Index for the year 2025, comes as a culmination of the continuous efforts led by the Authority to develop an integrated network of bicycle paths, noting that the lengths of paths have increased from 560 kilometers at the end of 2024 to 636 kilometers at the end of 2025, and that the riders’ satisfaction rate has reached 85%, and the number of trips has increased from 46.6 million trips in the year. 2024 to 57.3 million trips in 2025, a growth rate of 23.5%, in addition to the proportion of the population able to access bicycle path infrastructure reaching 22.3%.
The completed projects included the implementation of paths in a number of areas, including Al Khawaneej Second and Al Barsha Second, with a length of 18.5 km, in addition to paths in the Tolerance District and flexible mobility projects around mass transit stations in the areas of the Grand Souq, Hor Al Anz and Abu Hail, with a length of 25 km, in addition to the implementation of paths with a length of 7 km to connect the area to the On Pacific Metro Station and Al Quoz Bus Station, and a pedestrian and bicycle bridge on Al Manara Street with a length of 45 metres.
The works also included implementing paths at the entrances to the Al Warqa area and linking them to the existing paths with a length of 11 km, and paths within the Shindagha Axis development project with a length of approximately 10 km.
The Authority continues to implement a number of projects, most notably a path for bicycles and electric scooters within the 13.5-kilometre Hessa Street development project, linking Al Sufouh to Dubai Hills and serving 12 vital communities, and including two bridges crossing Sheikh Zayed and Al Khail Streets with a length of 528 meters and 501 meters, respectively, with a capacity of about 5,200 users per hour.
The Authority is also implementing additional pedestrian and bicycle bridges on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed and Dubai – Al Ain Streets with a length of 816 meters and 719 metres, in addition to new paths with a length of 64 kilometers in a number of areas, including Al Warqa, Al Qusais, International City, Dubai Silicon Oasis, Wadi Al Safa, and other paths within the development projects of Al Mustaqbal Street, Al Roya, Wadi Al Safa 5, and Al Safa 4 area.
