Emirates Water and Electricity Company receives 4 offers to develop the Nouf 1 power station project

Emirates Water and Electricity Company received four competitive offers to develop the Al Nouf 1 independent power plant project.

The four offers submitted include an offer from a consortium that includes Al Jomaih Power and Water Company, Sembcorp Industries, and EDF Energy Solutions Company, the second offer from a consortium that includes ENGIE, the Korea Overseas Infrastructure and Urban Development Company, and Korea Western Power Company, while the third offer was submitted by a consortium that includes the Korea Electric Power Company and the Union Water and Electricity Company, and the fourth offer is from Sumitomo Corporation.

The 3.3 gigawatt Nouf 1 independent station, which is equipped to capture carbon, will be the largest station of its kind in the country for generating electricity using combined cycle gas turbines. This project establishes a new standard of performance, through the use of advanced gas turbines, which are considered among the most efficient power generation turbines.

The station is located within the new Al Nouf complex, Emirates Water and Electricity Company’s latest strategic location dedicated to the energy sector in Abu Dhabi. This strategic coastal location is distinguished by its ability to accommodate the latest technologies in electricity generation and water desalination using low-carbon reverse osmosis technology. The complex was designed to be expandable in the long term, and is characterized by large areas and advanced infrastructure to support multiple future projects for electricity generation and water desalination at the facility level, which confirms Emirates Water and Electricity Company’s commitment to developing integrated energy complexes in terms of performance. Efficiency and environmental sustainability.

Ahmed Ali Al Shamsi, CEO of Emirates Water and Electricity Company, said that Abu Dhabi continues to consolidate its position as one of the most important leading entities for investment in energy infrastructure, and the great interest by international developers in competing to develop the Al Noaf 1 station project confirms the importance of the strategic projects implemented by the company and the success achieved by the independent producer model in Abu Dhabi.

He added that the development of the station project, the largest of its kind in the country, comes to produce energy using combined cycle gas turbines prepared to capture carbon as an essential step in conjunction with the deployment of unprecedented amounts of renewable energy, to provide the necessary operational flexibility to manage interruptions in energy sources and enhance the stability of the network, which confirms our ability to meet the demand for energy and reduce carbon emissions at the same time. The competitive offers submitted by major international companies also indicate the competitive strength of the Emirates Water and Electricity Company projects, and its vision aimed at achieving the sustainability of the utility sector.

It is noteworthy that highly efficient and flexible gas-operated stations, such as Al Noaf 1 station, contribute mainly to ensuring the security of supplies during the transition to renewable and clean energy that the energy sector is witnessing in the country, and by integrating artificial intelligence technologies, digital twinning and advanced monitoring systems, to improve the system’s life cycle performance and flexibility, this station will combine energy efficiency and operational flexibility to maintain the system’s sustainability and stability.

As part of the successful independent producer model in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, this project is expected to contribute to achieving Emiratization goals by enhancing the qualification of the country’s citizens to play vital roles in the sector, and supporting the goals of the career development program.

The Al Noaf 1 independent station project reflects the strategy of the Emirates Water and Electricity Company aimed at achieving the transition of energy infrastructure in the country, promoting economic development, and creating job opportunities for qualified talent, in addition to playing a major role in achieving the goals of the Department of Energy regarding the Clean Energy Strategy for 2035 to produce electricity in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, and supporting the state’s strategic initiative to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.

The project is expected to begin its operations during the third quarter of 2029, while the Emirates Water and Electricity Company will analyze the offers received from both the technical and financial aspects.
