Two UNIFIL peacekeepers were killed, and the United Nations strongly condemns these unacceptable incidents

Lacroix said in statements to reporters that two other peacekeepers were injured – one of them seriously – in the explosion, the source of which has not yet been determined.
He recalled that this comes after a peacekeeper from the Indonesian battalion was killed in an explosion that occurred inside a UNIFIL base in the town of Taybeh, also located in the eastern sector of southern Lebanon. Another soldier was also seriously injured and was transferred to a hospital in Beirut to receive treatment.
He expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the peacekeepers who were victims of these events, and to the government of Indonesia, wishing a full recovery for the injured.
Lacroix said: “We strongly condemn these unacceptable incidents; peacekeepers should never be the target of attacks.”.
He stressed that UNIFIL is currently conducting investigations into these incidents to determine the circumstances of these tragic developments.
Extremely dangerous conditions
The UN official expressed deep concern about the many hostile actions targeting UNIFIL peacekeepers during the past two days, stressing that “All actions that endanger the lives of peacekeepers must stop immediately.”.
He called on all parties to adhere to their commitments to ensure the safety and security of peacekeepers at all times, and to respect and safeguard the sanctity of United Nations facilities.
He stressed that UN peacekeepers continue to perform their duties on the ground in implementation of the mandate issued by the Security Council, “This is under extremely dangerous circumstances.”.
Lacroix said that peacekeepers work under restrictions that limit the scope of their movements. “But they continue to do their best and do everything they can to accomplish.”.
He added: “The men and women of UNIFIL demonstrate the utmost courage and commitment to promoting international peace and security, while working to this end far from their homelands. We express to them our deep appreciation and gratitude.”.
He reiterated the United Nations Secretary-General’s call to all parties to stop the fighting, stressing that full implementation was necessary Security Council Resolution No. 1701 By both parties is the only way to reach a long-term solution to this conflict.
