Egypt raises the minimum wage for workers in the public sector

Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said on Wednesday that the government will raise the minimum wage for workers in the public sector to 8,000 Egyptian pounds (about $149) per month, starting in July, explaining that the wages item in the general budget for the fiscal year 2026/2027 has been increased by more than 20%.

For his part, Egyptian Finance Minister Ahmed Kajouk said that the implementation of the wage increase begins on the first of next July.

The minister added that the budget for the next fiscal year witnesses a 30% increase in health allocations and a 20% increase in the education budget.

Mostafa Madbouly added in a press conference following a cabinet meeting that Egypt’s reserves of strategic goods are sufficient for 6 months, and that the government is working to increase this quantity enough for an additional two months.

He pointed out that measures to rationalize energy consumption, including closing stores and commercial centers, will be followed by the implementation of the decision to work remotely for employees of some government agencies and banks, starting next Sunday.

He explained: “We are working to ensure that the economy is not affected by these measures, but they will reduce traffic and not only rationalize electricity.” He said that there is a “high possibility that these measures will continue if the crisis continues.”
