3.1% deficit in the general budget in Italy during 2025

Rome, April 3, 2025: Italy recorded a deficit in its general budget during the past year, 2025, at 3.1% of GDP, exceeding the ceiling allowed in the European Union.

The Italian Statistical Office stated in a statement that although this percentage was less than the deficit rate recorded in 2024, which amounted to 3.4%, it remains less than the 3% rate that the European Union targets to ensure the safety of the public finances of its member states.

Italy was hoping to record a lower deficit rate to pave the way for Rome to exit the cycle of excessive public deficit measures applied to it by the European bloc, a mechanism that includes countries that record high deficit rates in public budgets.
