After a struggle with illness, Sajida Obaid, the icon of popular singing, passed away

The Iraqi artist Sajida Obaid passed away at the age of 68, after a struggle with illness, making the artistic scene lose a name associated with Iraqi popular singing and leaving a wide presence in the public’s memory.

Her death came days after rumors followed her on social media, which her family was quick to deny, denouncing their circulation at the expense of the feelings of those close to her.

According to medical sources, the deceased lived critical moments in intensive care in a hospital in Erbil, after she suffered a sudden cardiac arrest. Although the doctors succeeded in temporarily resuscitating her, her condition remained very serious until she died today, Saturday, while the Iraqi Artists Syndicate officially mourned her death.

Sajida Obaid began singing at an early age, before her fame took off at the end of the seventies with the song “Yatema”, after which she established her presence as one of the most prominent voices of popular singing.

She was distinguished by her ability to perform Iraqi Maqamat in a special style that combined popular singing and traditional authenticity, and she presented works that remained firmly established in the public’s conscience, including “This Sweet One Katalni,” “Khala, O Khala,” and “I Want to Treat All My Family.”

Her attendance was not limited to popular concerts, but she also participated in international festivals, including the Babylon International Festival and the Lausanne Festival in Switzerland, and she was known for her strong presence on stage and her direct interaction with the audience.

A number of artists and composers also expressed their shock at her passing, stressing that she remained until her last days an example of courage in the face of illness.
