Ecuador raises customs duties on Colombian goods by 100%

Quito, April 10, 2017 – Ecuador announced that it will raise customs duties on imports from neighboring Colombia to 100%, starting next May.

Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa began a trade confrontation with Colombia last January due to what he described as Bogotá’s lack of cooperation in combating drug smuggling and illegal mining along their common border, and after customs duties were initially 30%, he later raised them to 50%. Colombia responded by imposing 50% tariffs and halting electricity sales to Ecuador, which suffers from chronic energy shortages.
