The UAE chairs the 17th meeting of the Metrology Council for Islamic Countries

ABU DHABI, April 10, 2018 (WAM) – The UAE chaired the seventeenth meeting of the Metrology Council for Islamic Countries (SMIIC/MC), in a step that enhances the unification of international standards and consolidates its global leadership in the field of metrology.
The meeting was recently held via video communication technology, with the participation of representatives of 57 countries, along with a number of regional and international partner organizations.
The meeting was chaired by His Excellency Saeed Al Muhairi, Executive Director of the Emirates Institute of Metrology and Chairman of the Metrology Council for Islamic Countries, stressing that the UAE’s presidency of this meeting reflects the growing level of international confidence in its competence in the field of metrology, and reflects its firm commitment to continuing to develop an integrated measurement system at the regional and international levels.
He pointed out continuing to work with partners to promote unification of standards, in a way that supports sustainable development paths and enhances the competitiveness of member states on the global stage.
The participants discussed a number of strategic files that reflect the future directions of the metrology system in Islamic countries. The most prominent topics of the meeting included adopting the “Metrology Council Strategy”, following up on the implementation of the current work plan, reviewing the developments of the technical working groups and their budgets, in addition to approving the formation of technical working groups “TFGs” for the 2026-2028 session, in a way that enhances the integration of efforts and raises the level of coordination among member states.
Dr. Ismail Al-Faleh, President of the Gulf Metrology Organization, delivered a speech in which he stressed the importance of strengthening regional cooperation and intensifying joint work in the fields of measurement and calibration, in a way that supports the quality of products and services and increases the competitiveness of national economies.
In the context of reviewing the reports and developments of the member states, Engineer Ali Al Menhali, Director of the Scientific and Industrial Metrology Department at the Emirates Institute of Metrology, gave a comprehensive presentation in which he reviewed the Institute’s latest services and achievements, highlighting the advanced development of the quality infrastructure in the country, and the global levels it has achieved that enhance confidence in the measurement and calibration system.
Other member states also reviewed the most prominent achievements of their national institutes, in confirmation of the growing interest in developing this vital sector.
This meeting confirms the leadership role of the UAE in supporting and developing the metrology system at the regional and international levels, as the country continues to consolidate its position as an active partner in unifying standards and promoting economic integration among Islamic countries, in addition to consecrating the position of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi as a leading global destination and a strategic reference in the fields of quality and infrastructure.
