"Emirates Water and Electricity" Launches second quarter 2026 auction for clean energy certificates

Abu Dhabi, April 13, 2026 – The Emirates Water and Electricity Company called on all parties to take positive measures to reduce carbon from their operations, by registering in the Clean Energy Certificates Auction for the second quarter of 2026, which is scheduled to be held on April 30, 2026, as it provides companies and institutions with an advanced and transparent tool to document that the electricity consumed is from clean energy sources.

Since the launch of its regulatory policy by the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy in 2021, the Clean Energy Certification Scheme has witnessed clear development, becoming an essential business pillar for companies committed to sustainable growth.

As the sole operator and registrant of the auction, Emirates Water and Electricity Company is actively working to enable various sectors to adopt practical steps towards adopting renewable and clean energy, including the healthcare sector, digital infrastructure, retail, hospitality, and heavy industries, allowing entities to improve their environmental footprint and significantly reduce Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions, secure their future operations in the face of changing environmental expectations, and meet consumers’ environmental, social and corporate governance requirements. and existing investors.

In this context, Mohammed Al Marzouqi, Chief Asset Officer at Emirates Water and Electricity Company, said that the clean energy certificates scheme is an important commercial and strategic catalyst in shaping the features of Abu Dhabi’s economic future, noting that with the opening of registration for the second quarter auction of 2026, Emirates Water and Electricity Company calls on all parties to take practical steps in leading climate efforts, as these certificates allow institutions from various sectors to contribute directly to supporting the country’s strategic initiative to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, and the continued growth in the participation of various sectors confirms the vital role played by the UAE in leading the global endeavors for the energy transition, and its ability to provide the necessary infrastructure for a cleaner and more competitive economy.

It is noteworthy that clean energy certificates are digital certificates that are tradable in units of 1 megawatt per hour, allowing entities to document that the electricity consumed is issued by clean energy sources, such as solar energy, nuclear energy, and wind energy. These certificates are issued in units of 1 megawatt per hour of emission-free energy, and are compatible with the standards of the International Renewable Energy Certifications (I-REC), as they ensure adherence to the best global practices in tracking and verification, which gives entities international accreditation for institutional sustainability reports.

Participation in the second quarter auction for clean energy certificates is available until April 30, 2026. The auction will be conducted according to the competitive clearing mechanism “payment by offer”, allowing participants to submit strategic offers to obtain their share of clean energy, and the final results are expected to be announced by May 7, 2026.
