A UN rapporteur calls for the exclusion of the occupying entity from the Council of Europe

The UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories, Francesca Albanese, said that The Israeli occupation entity must be excluded from the The occupation as an observer in the Parliamentary Assembly For the Council of Europe, and it could be ruled out due to the Knesset’s adoption at the end of March of a law allowing the death penalty to be imposed on Palestinian prisoners.

For Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, the legislation indicates that the death penalty will be the default punishment if the Israeli military courts classify the crime of murder as "Terrorist act"

The abolition of the death penalty is an indispensable condition for joining the Council of Europe, the main organization concerned with defending human rights on the European continent.

The Council includes an assembly composed of 612 parliamentarians from the 46 member states, in addition to 3 countries participating in it as observers: Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

The occupation violates international law.

Albanese stressed that "International law places an obligation on states not to provide any support to a state that violates international law"

She continued: "Israel should be excluded from the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe". She denounced a selective approach to human life within European institutions, and pointed out that Israel benefits from this selectivity.

At the end of March, Albanese published a report concluding that: "Israel has effectively been given a license to torture Palestinians".
