The 50-year-old Ternos currently holds the position of Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering. He has worked at Apple since 2001, nearly half his life, after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
He started his career in the design team, then became Vice President of Hardware Engineering in 2013. His scope of responsibilities currently includes overseeing the hardware engineering teams responsible for iPhoneAnd iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, AirPods, and Vision Pro mixed reality glasses.
Johani Sorori, senior vice president of hardware technology, is scheduled to take over as chief device officer, succeeding Ternos in an expanded role that includes leading the entire hardware engineering.
Major challenges ahead for Apple’s new president
Despite its rich legacy, Ternos faces significant challenges, most notably an increasingly complex supply chain, And geopolitical tensions, and tariffs imposed by the administration of President Donald Trump, in addition to the pressure of increasing demand for artificial intelligence chips.
But perhaps the most pressing challenge is pushing the company towards leadership in the field of Artificial Intelligence, where Apple lags behind its counterparts from major technology companies. It was subjected to severe criticism from investors and specialists after it postponed upgrading its voice assistant "Siri" Last year, although the company pledged to launch an updated version of it based on a model "Google Gemini" For artificial intelligence, it also restructured its leadership in this field last December by appointing a veteran official from Google.
Tim Cook’s legacy and records
During Cook’s 15-year tenure, Apple’s market value jumped more than 20-fold to close Monday at $4 trillion, and revenues nearly quadrupled to exceed $400 billion in the last fiscal year.
Cook also led the shift towards wearable devices such as the Apple Watch. And AirPods headphones and Vision Pro glasses, although the latter did not achieve widespread popularity.
Cook is considered a legend in Silicon Valley in the field of supply chain management, which he restructured after joining Apple in 1998 when the company was on the verge of bankruptcy. His personal wealth amounts to about $3 billion, according to Forbes, while his total compensation last year amounted to $74.6 million.
