Syria is witnessing the first public trial of senior figures of the former regime

The first public trial of senior figures of the Bashar al-Assad regime began in Syria today, Sunday, in the presence of the Attorney General of the Republic, Judge Counselor Hassan Al-Turbah, at the Palace of Justice in Damascus.

According to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), the historic session was opened under the chairmanship of the judge of the Fourth Criminal Court, marking the first session of the trial against the accused Atef Najeeb, amid strict security and judicial procedures.

The accused, Atef Najib, appears before the court on charges related to committing crimes against the Syrian people, making him the first of the members of the former regime to be accused.

The trial session is attended by a number of victims’ families in the fourth criminal courtroom, in addition to a number of Arab and international lawyers and media professionals.
