The British Prime Minister may be investigated in the Mandelson case

The Times newspaper reported that the British Parliament will vote tomorrow, Tuesday, on the possibility of conducting an investigation into Prime Minister Keir Starmer, to examine whether he misled the House of Commons regarding the appointment of former ambassador to the United States, Peter Mandelson.

Any such investigation could have serious repercussions for Starmer’s future.

The British Prime Minister has so far resisted pressure to resign over his decision to appoint Mandelson, but if it is proven that he deliberately misled Parliament, his position is likely to become extremely difficult.

The newspaper said that Speaker of the House of Commons, Lindsay Hoyle, will approve a request for a parliamentary debate and vote on whether the Privileges Committee should consider this issue.

Starmer’s Labor Party has a majority in parliament, which could allow the government to direct its MPs to vote against an investigation.

If Parliament votes in favor of an investigation, the committee, made up of MPs from the three major parties, will examine whether Starmer’s statements about Mandelson constitute intentional or unintentional misleading of the House of Commons.

Any such investigation is expected to focus on Starmer’s statements that proper legal procedures were followed when appointing Mandelson.
