index "Nikki" The Japanese exceeds 62 thousand points for the first time

TOKYO, May 7, 2017 (WAM) – Japan’s Nikkei index jumped to a record high today with the resumption of trading in financial markets after the holidays, supported by optimism about strong profits in the technology sector.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 index rose 4.19 percent to its highest level ever at 62,009.59 points. The broader Topix index rose 2.12 percent to 3,807.84 points.

Japanese government bonds increased after a three-day holiday, during which the yen rose amid speculation that the authorities would intervene to support the currency.

The yen exchange rate reached 156.33 to the dollar, relatively stable a day after reaching its highest level in ten weeks at 155, raising speculation of new official intervention.
