8 killed and 32 injured in a train-bus collision in Thailand

Rescue officials and the Deputy Minister of Transport in Thailand said that at least eight people were killed and 32 were injured, today, Saturday, after a freight train collided with a bus at a railway crossing in Bangkok, which led to the outbreak of a massive fire on board the bus.
Officials said that fire and rescue teams were dispatched immediately after the fire broke out in the bus and nearby vehicles near the Makassan station of the Airport Rail Link, adding that other cars and motorcycles were affected by the accident.
Deputy Transport Minister Siripong Angasakulkiat told reporters that initial reports indicate that the bus stopped on the train strip at a red traffic light, which prevented the crossing barriers from being closed.
He added that the train, which was transporting containers, was unable to stop in time to avoid colliding with the bus.
He explained, “Eight people were killed and 32 were injured, and the injured are receiving treatment in different hospitals. All eight dead were on board the bus.”
Video clips circulated on social media showed the moment the train collided with the bus and was dragged by a number of other nearby vehicles along the train strip.
Officials said that rescue teams recovered injured people from under the rubble while firefighting teams battled the flames.
They explained that the fire is now under control and that teams are working to cool and ventilate the vehicles while continuing to search for injured or dead people. The causes of the accident are still under investigation.
