Emirates completes modernization of its first two-class Airbus A380 aircraft

Emirates Airlines continued to make significant progress in its ambitious fleet modernization program, whose investments are estimated at billions of dollars, with the completion of the modernization of the first Airbus A380 aircraft with its previous two-class design.

The updated aircraft, registered under the number A6-EUX, has already entered service on flights EK 39 and EK 40 between Dubai and Birmingham, offering completely new interior cabins that include the latest Emirates products in three travel classes, including 76 seats in business class, 56 seats in premium economy class, and 437 seats in economy class.

This aircraft is the first of 15 two-class Airbus A380 aircraft that will undergo modernization as part of Emirates Airlines’ program aimed at providing a more distinguished and consistent travel experience for customers across its various flights.

The modernization program is entirely managed by the Emirates Engineering Center team in Dubai, and has so far completed the modernization of 95 aircraft in the carrier’s fleet, including 42 Airbus A380 aircraft and 53 Boeing 777 aircraft, representing more than a third of the carrier’s current fleet.

Sir Tim Clark, President of Emirates Airlines, said: “Emirates’ fleet modernization program is based on a clear goal of providing an exceptional travel experience that meets our customers’ expectations on every trip.

From this standpoint, our engineering teams continue to work at an accelerated pace and in close cooperation with an integrated system of partners and suppliers, to implement precise and comprehensive modernization processes that ensure the integration of the best international products and technologies on board every aircraft within the program.”

He added: “The modernization program contributed to redrawing the standards of excellence at various levels, whether in terms of the volume and complexity of operations or the level of craftsmanship and accuracy in implementation.

“The conversion of the two-class Airbus A380 aircraft to a three-class configuration, with the addition of Premium Economy Class seats on the upper deck, reflects the advanced capabilities and exceptional expertise of our engineering center teams.”

A qualitative addition to the premium economy class

As part of the modernization programme, Emirates’ award-winning Premium Economy Class cabin will be available for the first time on the upper deck of Airbus A380 aircraft.

The cabin includes wide leather seats with a 2-3-2 arrangement and spacious spaces that allow for more comfort and relaxation, with the ability to recline the seats.

The experience also provides a range of advanced features, including full leg and footrests, a six-way adjustable headrest, built-in charging ports, and side tables for drinks, in addition to a fine dining experience and an advanced entertainment system via a 13.3-inch personal screen.

Cabins updated to modern standards

The updated three-class Airbus A380 features upgraded interior cabins in various classes, including the latest generation of seats and new interior finishes. The aircraft has undergone a comprehensive refresh, from new carpets to ceiling panels, with new design elements that reflect Emirates’ identity throughout the cabin, including modern colours, decorations inspired by the Ghaf tree, and luxurious wooden details.

Details of the reconfiguration of the first two-class Airbus A380 aircraft

During the modernization process, the entire interior of the A6-EUX was dismantled, refurbished and meticulously reassembled.

The Emirates Airline Engineering Center team carried out extensive modifications to the upper deck of the plane, which included removing 120 seats from economy class to make way for the installation of 56 seats in premium economy class and 18 additional seats in business class.

To support this modification in cabin distribution, the team carried out advanced structural works that included removing, modernizing and redistributing kitchen units, storage areas, overhead lockers and internal partitions, in addition to implementing modifications related to the electrical systems, water systems and services inside the aircraft.

A team of about 50 engineers and technicians participated in implementing the modernization process, who worked approximately 35,000 working hours, using more than 2,500 different types of spare parts and components.

The process of modernizing the first aircraft of this model took about two months, including planning, preparation and comprehensive testing stages. By benefiting from the experiences and lessons learned from the first project, it is expected that the modernization period for future aircraft of the same type will be reduced to only about 30 days.

By the end of 2026, all 15 two-class Airbus A380 aircraft in Emirates’ fleet will have undergone the full modernization programme.

Stages of development of the Emirates fleet modernization programme

Emirates Airlines’ ambitious fleet modernization program in 2021 was announced for the first time, based on a strategic vision aimed at ensuring that the distinguished travel experience standards for which the carrier is famous are presented in a consistent and smooth manner to customers around the world. The first phase of the program aimed to modernize 120 aircraft, but by May 2024, with the great success achieved by the program and positive feedback from customers, its scope was expanded to include 191 aircraft, before rising later during the same year to 219 aircraft. A specialized team of about 270 employees is working on implementing the program, ensuring that an average of two modernized aircraft depart from the hangars of the Emirates Engineering Center in Dubai every month.

Responsible consumption

In line with its commitment to reducing its environmental impact, Emirates Airlines is evaluating materials and components recovered from the 219 Airbus A380 and Boeing 777 aircraft subject to the cabin modernization program, with the aim of repurposing them as part of the carrier’s recycling and sustainable innovation initiatives.

These efforts resulted in the launch of a number of successful initiatives, including the “Aircrafted” collection of limited-edition collectible products, which includes products such as travel bags, in addition to the “Aircrafted Kids” collection bags made from reused economy class seat fabric. To date, Emirates Airlines has donated about 4,000 bags to children in 10 countries around the world.
