The number of Lebanese victims exceeds 3,000 despite the cessation of hostilities agreement

According to the Lebanese Ministry of Health, at least 22 people were killed and 28 others were injured in southern Lebanon yesterday, Tuesday alone, bringing the total toll to more than three thousand deaths and 9,301 infections nationwide since March 2, when the conflict intensified.

United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric said that the UN peacekeeping mission (UNIFIL) communication “Intense air and ground activity was monitored throughout its area of ​​operations, including multiple Israeli air strikes.”It led to the death of 19 people, including three children, according to the Lebanese authorities.

Dujarric said – in his daily press conference – that people are still forced to flee their homes, in light of… “Humanitarian needs remain very high.”

He added: “Despite the agreement to stop hostilities, more than one million people – about one-fifth of Lebanon’s population – remain displaced. The United Nations Population Fund indicates that there are about 13,000 pregnant women currently displaced. About 1,500 of them are expected to give birth within the next month, and they are in dire and urgent need of life-saving health care.”

The spokesman stated that the United Nations partners in the humanitarian and health fields continue to expand the scope of their support in close coordination with the Lebanese government.

For its part, the United Nations Population Fund reported that it provided sexual and reproductive health services, as well as support related to gender-based violence, to more than 80,000 displaced people in health facilities, through mobile teams, and in safe spaces within shelter centers and host communities.

United Nations partners also provided support to the Ministry of Public Health to provide more than 66,000 initial health consultations and provide the necessary medications to treat acute diseases to about 90,000 people since March 2.

It should be noted that Lebanon and Israel had agreed to a cessation of hostilities on April 16, which was later extended on May 15 for an additional 45 days, during talks held in Washington, facilitated by the United States of America.
