A blow to the Spanish national team. Barcelona star Fermin Lopez will miss the World Cup

Spaniard Fermin Lopez announced yesterday that he will miss the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which begins next month, after undergoing surgery following a fracture in the metatarsal of his right foot.
The Barcelona midfielder suffered the injury during his team’s 3-1 home win against Real Betis last Sunday, and the club confirmed that he will need surgery.
Lopez wrote on Instagram: “The surgery went well, and I am already looking forward to coming back stronger physically and mentally. Life and football can be tough when you don’t expect it or don’t deserve it.” He added: “But you have to accept that all of this is part of the journey. It is a very difficult period for me, and another challenge in my career that I will overcome, and you can trust that.. it’s time.” “Now is the time to support the national team and my teammates from home.”
Lopez was hoping to join the national team after he had a distinguished season, scoring 13 goals and 17 assists in the 48 matches he played in all competitions, to contribute to Barcelona retaining the Spanish League title and winning the Spanish Super Cup.
Spain, the 2010 World Cup champion, will begin its campaign in Group H on June 15, facing Cape Verde in Atlanta, Georgia, before meeting Saudi Arabia and Uruguay.
The coach, Luis de la Fuente, is scheduled to announce the national team’s squad for the World Cup next Monday.
