Asylum applications to Austria are declining at a steady rate

Asylum application rates in Austria continued to decline during the first third of this year.

The total decreased by about 45%, to 3,397 applications, compared to the same period last year 2025.

Austria received 3,397 asylum applications, from the beginning of January until the end of April, of which only 1,410 were for individuals who had recently arrived in Austria, while the rest of the applications were for children born inside the country. The percentage of decline in the number of applications was no less than 41% during the previous months, before it rose to 45% in April.

Austrian Interior Minister Gerhard Karner described the decline as a “positive development,” and explained that the goal is to combat the abuse of the asylum and protection system to help individuals who are in dire need of assistance.
