France fines Shein $26 million for violating consumer protection rules


The French authorities imposed a fine on the fashion company (SHEIN), approximately 22 million euros (26 million $), due to issues related to returns, product information and order confirmations, a penalty that the company described as unfair and pledged to appeal.

The General Directorate of Competition, Consumer Affairs and Anti-Punishment said FraudFrance said on Wednesday that it had fined Shein 16.7 million euros over order confirmation issues, and 5.8 million euros over issues related to returns and environmental quality information.

A spokesman said "Shein" In a statement: "Technical issues, which have no impact on consumers, were used as a basis for an exceptional penalty. We therefore intend to strongly object to both penalties in their entirety"

France imposed a fine of 40 million euros on the company due to misleading discounts in July. The authorities also sought to suspend the operations of its stores, but the Paris Court of Appeal rejected this step.

And faced "Shein"which has attracted millions of shoppers looking for low-priced clothing, gadgets and accessories, has come under increasing scrutiny in France since last November, when the consumer watchdog found inappropriate products and banned weapons for sale on its online store.

Small and medium-sized companiesin France, in a post on the X website: "Since the discovery, we have decided not to leave these platforms to their own devices, and will continue to take action until they completely change their practices or leave our market.".
