"Sharjah Heritage" The University of Sharjah discusses scientific and research cooperation

SHARJAH, June 10, 2018 (WAM) – The Sharjah Heritage Institute and the University of Sharjah discussed ways to enhance joint cooperation in the scientific, research and cultural fields in a way that contributes to the development of qualitative projects concerned with scientific and cultural heritage and opens new horizons for knowledge and academic exchange locally and internationally.

This came during a meeting with His Excellency Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Musallam, President of the Sharjah Institute for Heritage, at the Institute’s headquarters today, with a delegation from the University of Sharjah, headed by Dr. Jairo Alfonso, Dean of the College of Communication, in the presence of a number of department directors and officials at the Institute.

Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Musallam pointed to the existing cooperation between the two sides, which has resulted in the implementation of joint research and scientific programs and projects over the past years, in addition to scientific publishing initiatives that have contributed to enhancing the presence of Emirati and Arab heritage in the academic and cognitive fields.

He stressed that the Sharjah Institute for Heritage views scientific partnerships as a fundamental pillar in developing heritage work and expanding its impact, and continues to open its doors to local and international academic and research institutions based on its belief in the importance of knowledge integration and the exchange of expertise and successful experiences.

The meeting discussed aspects of cooperation between the Institute and the Sharjah International Foundation for the History of Science among Arabs and Muslims through the UNESCO Chair for Diplomacy and Scientific Heritage. A group of future initiatives were discussed, including the Small Research Grants Programme, support for the 2027 Winter School, and the development of open online educational courses (MOOCs).

The two sides discussed supporting the joint doctoral program between the University of Sharjah and the University of Groningen, working on research and technical projects in the fields of virtual reality and augmented reality, issuing an international journal specializing in Arab and Islamic heritage studies, and producing a podcast series in the Arabic language that addresses Arab and Islamic scientific heritage and public diplomacy.

The two parties discussed opportunities for joint academic supervision of doctoral dissertations and launching research projects for postgraduate students based on cultural studies in Sharjah and the world, as well as enhancing joint scientific publishing between faculty members at the University of Sharjah and researchers at the Sharjah Heritage Institute, in a way that enhances the production of specialized knowledge in the fields of heritage and culture.
