The Swiss vote on a proposal that limits the population to ten million people

Voters in Switzerland will vote today on a proposal aimed at setting a cap on the country’s population.

The constitutional amendment, proposed by the right-wing Swiss People’s Party, stipulates that the population should not exceed 10 million people by 2050, in light of growing concerns about immigration and growing pressures on public services and the housing sector.

Official forecasts indicate that Switzerland may reach this number by the early 2040s.

If the proposal is adopted, exceeding the threshold of 10 million people will lead to launching measures that may push Switzerland to cancel the free movement of labor agreement with the European Union, whose member states constitute a major source of the country’s workforce.

The population of Switzerland currently amounts to more than nine million people, while opinion polls indicate a sharp division among voters regarding the proposal.
