28 people were killed in a bus accident

At least 28 people were killed and others were injured after a bus fell into a valley in northern Ethiopia on Monday, according to local authorities.

The authorities explained on Facebook that the bus, which was heading from the city of Dessie in the Amhara region to the capital, Addis Ababa, “fell into a valley about 100 meters deep.”

Officials said that 28 people were killed, while “injuries ranged from minor to serious,” without specifying the number of injured, especially since the total number of bus passengers was not revealed.

Pictures posted on the local authorities’ Facebook page showed a semi-crashed vehicle on a slope.

Traffic accidents are common in Ethiopia, the second most populous country in Africa, where roads often suffer from poor maintenance.

The accident complements a series of fatal accidents in the country, including an accident that occurred in December 2024, killing more than 70 people after a vehicle carrying a wedding procession fell into a river, in the worst accident of its kind in a quarter century.
