A traffic accident kills 9 people

At least nine people, including two children, have died after a train and a bus collided in Zimbabwe, police and railway authorities said.

The accident occurred at a railway crossing in Triangle, a famous sugar-producing town in the south of the country, where a goods train collided with a bus, police said.

Railway spokesman Andrew Kanampura said in a statement that the bus driver did not stop to check there were no oncoming trains before crossing the tracks, which constitutes a violation of safety rules.

He added that at least 25 people were injured.

The accident occurred less than a week after a bus carrying school students caught fire in central Zimbabwe, resulting in the death of seven people.

It is noteworthy that traffic accidents are common in Zimbabwe, as a traffic accident occurs every 15 minutes, and about five people are killed and 38 people are injured every day, according to the country’s road safety agency. Authorities say human error accounts for 94% of road accidents in Zimbabwe.
