Ebola infections in Congo rose to 933, including 245 deaths

The Minister of Health of the Democratic Republic of the Congo said that the number of confirmed cases of Ebola infection in the country has risen to 933, including 245 deaths.

Speaking to reporters in Ituri province, where the first infections were reported in the current outbreak, Minister Samuel Roger Campa said 80 patients had recovered and been discharged from Ebola treatment centres.

A World Health Organization official said that 75 medical workers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo have been infected with Ebola, including 17 who have died since the start of the current outbreak of the virus in the country.

This outbreak, caused by the rare Bundibugyo strain, has become one of the most complex Ebola epidemics in recent years, and the virus has now spread to 3 regions, since the World Health Organization announced on May 17 that the outbreak represents a public health emergency of international concern.
