A 5.6 magnitude earthquake strikes central Japan, injuring 10 people

The Japanese Meteorological Agency reported that a strong earthquake, with a magnitude of 5.6, struck Yamanashi Prefecture in central Japan and nearby areas last night, and no tsunami warning was issued and no disturbance in volcanic activity was detected on Mount Fuji.

Japanese authorities said on Saturday that they had received reports of ten people suffering minor injuries, according to Japan Today newspaper today.

The earthquake occurred at 10:28 p.m., at a depth of about 20 kilometers, in the town of Fujikawaguchiko in Yamanashi Prefecture.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara said at a news conference that no disturbance had been found at nuclear power facilities, including the Hamaoka plant operated by Chubu Electric Power Company.
