Do birth control pills increase the risk of brain tumors?

A Danish study revealed that hormonal contraceptives used by millions of women around the world may be associated with a significant increase in the risk of developing a common type of brain tumor, known as meningioma.

The researchers analyzed the health records of more than three million women, between the ages of 15 and 59, over a quarter of a century, and found that contraceptives that contain the hormone progestogen, whether pills, injections, or intrauterine devices, were associated with a significant increase in the risk of developing this tumor.

The study showed that the strongest association with risk was with one of the commonly used contraceptive injections, in which the risk of developing a meningioma increased by 355% compared to non-users.

Researchers from the Danish Medicines Agency wrote in the journal JAMA Network Open that these findings indicate that the risk of meningioma may not be limited to high-dose treatments or Depo-Provera injections only, but extends to some common progestogens in daily contraceptives.

What is reassuring is that the study observed a decline in this risk in general within five years of women stopping using these methods. (Russia Today)
