Dubai adopts “VDX” as the first commercial helipad for electric aircraft in the world

The General Authority of Civil Aviation and Skyports Infrastructure announced that the VDX airstrip, the first commercial helipad in the world designed specifically for this purpose, has obtained regulatory approval for the operations of electric aircraft with vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL).

The facility was officially registered under the name “VDX” within the accreditation process conducted by the General Civil Aviation Authority, becoming the first commercial helipad specifically designed for this type of operation in the world to obtain regulatory accreditation, paving the way for the start of commercial air taxi services in Dubai in the future.

“VDX” will constitute the first and main airstrip within the planned air taxi network in Dubai, while three additional airstrips are currently being developed, and Skyports is developing the network in cooperation with the Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai.

The accreditation was granted after the General Civil Aviation Authority completed a comprehensive assessment that included the airstrip’s infrastructure, its physical and technical characteristics, operational procedures, safety management arrangements, emergency preparedness, and the extent of compliance with applicable regulatory requirements.

This historic achievement reinforces the UAE’s position as a world leader in the fields of aviation, innovation and advanced air mobility, and reflects its ability to transform ambitious national visions into a safe, organized and future-ready infrastructure.

The accreditation also contributes to supporting the goals of the “We Are the Emirates 2031” vision and the Dubai Economic Agenda D33 by promoting innovation, attracting investments, supporting economic diversification, and enabling sustainable mobility solutions.

The Director General of the General Authority of Civil Aviation, Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, said: “The adoption of the first commercial heliport in the world designed specifically for this type of operations represents a historic achievement for the UAE and a milestone in the future of aviation. This achievement reflects the vision of our wise leadership, the maturity of our regulatory system, and our national capabilities to enable innovation while maintaining the highest levels of safety.”

Assistant Director General of the Aviation Safety Affairs Sector at the General Authority of Civil Aviation, Engineer Aqeel Al Zarouni, added, “The approval of the VDX airstrip represents more than just approval of a new aviation facility. It confirms the UAE’s ability to establish a solid regulatory framework for emerging aviation technologies, while maintaining the highest levels of safety and regulatory oversight.”

The VDX airstrip includes two areas designated for take-off and landing, rapid charging infrastructure for electric aircraft, and advanced facilities to accommodate passenger traffic. The facility consists of four floors extending over an area of approximately 3,100 square metres, and was designed to accommodate up to 170,000 passengers annually when commercial operations begin.
