"Emirates Global Aluminium" Al Taweelah alumina refinery operations resume
ABU DHABI, July 10 / WAM / Emirates Global Aluminium, the world’s largest producer of “high-quality” aluminium, announced today the resumption of production operations at the Al Taweelah alumina refinery in Abu Dhabi.
It is expected that alumina production will rise to 50% of the full production capacity in the coming days, with the refinery reaching its full production capacity by the end of this year.
The timing of increasing production at Al Taweelah alumina refinery depends on the conditions of the supply chain and the company’s strategy for supplying alumina. Currently, aluminum production at Al Taweelah smelter does not depend on the refinery reaching its full production capacity.
Al Taweelah alumina refinery’s production reached 2.4 million tons of alumina in 2025, meeting 46% of the company’s alumina needs during that year. Alumina is the main raw material used in aluminum smelters.
Abdul Nasser bin Kalban, CEO of Emirates Global Aluminium, said that the resumption of production operations at Al Taweelah alumina refinery represents an important milestone in the ongoing efforts to restart the company’s site in Al Taweelah, and strengthen its position as one of the most important and largest aluminum production facilities in the world, explaining that this achievement is due to the dedication and flexibility of the work team, and their pivotal role in restarting operations according to the highest standards of safety and efficiency.
It is noteworthy that production operations at Al Taweelah alumina refinery stopped on March 28 as a result of the Iranian attacks on the Khalifa Economic Zone in Abu Dhabi. The refinery resumed production of alumina hydrate, the raw material used in alumina production, on June 24.
Al Taweelah alumina refinery began production operations in 2019, and is located next to the company’s Al Taweelah smelter in Abu Dhabi. Alumina is transported to the smelter’s storage facilities via a network of conveyor belts.
