“It will never be a problem.” The new Portugal coach defines his position on Cristiano Ronaldo

Jorge Jesus confirmed on Friday, after he was officially appointed as the new coach of the Portuguese national football team, succeeding Spaniard Roberto Martinez, who left his position after being eliminated from the World Cup in the quarter-finals, that he will call up veteran star Cristiano Ronaldo if he is available, stressing that the striker “will never” be a problem.
The 41-year-old was criticized for his performance in the World Cup this summer under the leadership of Martinez, who announced the end of his career with the national team after being eliminated from the quarter-finals on Monday by Spain (0-1).
It is true that Ronaldo decided the issue of his participation in the World Cup, which was his last, but he did not talk about his retirement from playing with the national team.
“As long as he continues to play and is ready to be called up to the squad, I will call him up within certain limits and under the conditions that I deem best for the national team,” Jesus told reporters on Friday during his official presentation.
The 71-year-old coach revealed that he has not yet spoken with Ronaldo, but they will discuss the future of the Saudi Al-Nasr star in the game.
He said, “I have not spoken to Chris yet… Chris will never be a problem for the national team. Neither for the national team nor for me.”
He added, “Chris is a symbol of Portuguese football. Chris is a symbol of the national team… and he will remain so forever in the history books. I was very pleased to work with him during the past year (with Al-Nassr)… It is easy to work with him…”
He added, “We will have a conversation about what he wants to do in the next stage of his career.”
Jesus supervised the training of Ronaldo, a five-time Ballon d’Or winner, at Al-Nasr before his departure in May after leading the team to the Saudi League title.
Jesus added, “I know that (Ronaldo) wants to continue playing with Al-Nasr, because, as you know, I spent a year with him. He always told me that I will end my career in Al-Nasr.”
Jesus will lead Portugal until after the 2030 World Cup, which his country is co-hosting with Spain and Morocco.
