“The referee’s decision is disastrous.” Switzerland becomes angry at the whistle in the Argentina match

Switzerland expressed its dissatisfaction after the expulsion of its striker Briel Embolo on Saturday in the quarter-finals of the North American Football World Cup against Argentina (1-3 after overtime), with midfielder Fabian Rieder describing the decision as “disastrous.”
Argentine Leandro Paredes received a yellow card due to an alleged foul on Embolo in the second half. But the referee, who was summoned by his assistants to review the footage via video, spotted an act by the French club Rennes striker and punished him with a warning, his second in the match, which meant he was sent off.
“It’s simply disastrous,” Reeder told reporters in the mixed zone. “I don’t know what this referee did here. I don’t understand why he was called for such a situation.”
The German Augsburg player added, “I do not understand how the video assistant referee can change a match in a scene like this. The referee must simply be left to do his job.”
For his part, coach Murat Yakin expressed his astonishment at the yellow card that was initially given to Paredes, and at the series of repercussions that followed.
He said in a press conference: “There was no justification for granting this yellow card. I do not understand. It was a harmless situation. I do not understand how this decision was made and in the end our player was sent off.”
He stressed that he did not blame Embolo. “It was absurd to hold him responsible. He is completely devastated because he was unable to help the team.”
He pointed out that his counterpart, Lionel Scaloni, “was comfortable, and this also shows that Argentina took us seriously.”
He added, “Even with ten players, we fought hard. We did a great job, and we wanted to go to penalty kicks because the momentum would have been with us.”
He concluded by saying: “I will not say that they (the Argentines) received preferential treatment. We had a good and open match. The two teams played football, but unfortunately we did not emerge victorious today. It is very clear: I believe that football did not emerge victorious.”
