Rio de Janeiro, July 13, 2017 – The Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Jiu-Jitsu Championship, which was sponsored by the EDGE Group, concluded yesterday evening in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro, with the participation of more than 2,000 male and female players from 31 countries, including 500 black belt players, in a new confirmation of the prestigious global status of the tournament organized by the Abu Dhabi Association of Jiu-Jitsu Professionals (AJP) in a number of… The most prominent global capitals.
The tournament, which extended over two days, witnessed strong competition in various age groups and belts, amid a large audience, especially families and parents who were keen to support the players, reflecting the growing popularity of the tournament in Brazil and the constant demand for participation in the rounds of the Abu Dhabi Professional Jiu-Jitsu Association.
In terms of results, Brazil topped the ranking of participating countries with 297,600 points, followed by Chile in second place with 23,400 points, then Costa Rica in third place with 9,600 points.
In the ranking of academies, the Emirati “Commando Group” Academy came in first place with 36,000 points, followed by the Brazilian “Giracao UPP” Academy with 23,550 points, while the Brazilian “GFTEAM” Academy also came in third place with 17,700 points, a reflection of the high technical level and strong competition witnessed in the tournament.
Tariq Al-Bahri, Director General of the Abu Dhabi Professional Jiu-Jitsu Association, confirmed that the Rio de Janeiro station continued to enhance the global standing of the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Championship, noting that the large turnout from players, academies and fans embodies the confidence that the tournament has gained through years of work and development.
He said that the Rio de Janeiro station witnessed distinguished technical levels that reflected the rapid development witnessed by the sport of jiu-jitsu worldwide, in addition to a remarkable public presence and wide participation from various countries, which confirms the success of the association’s vision in providing a professional platform that brings together elite players and contributes to supporting the spread of the game internationally.
He added that the association thanks the “Edge” group for its continued support, and all the partners who contributed to the success of this station, stressing the continuation of work to provide an exceptional season, and looking forward to receiving the players in the next station in the Russian capital, Moscow, in a way that enhances the tournament’s progress and provides new opportunities to compete at the highest levels.
The Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Jiu-Jitsu Championship rounds will continue with its next stop in the Russian capital, Moscow, on August 29 and 30, at the Dynamo Sports Academy, before the tournament continues its journey through its global stations during the 2026-2027 season, as part of the efforts of the Abu Dhabi Professional Jiu-Jitsu Association to consolidate Abu Dhabi’s position as a global capital of Jiu-Jitsu and enhance its spread throughout the world.
