Jennifer Finch, bass player for the alternative rock band L7, has died at the age of 59, just a few days after announcing that she had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer.

According to Page Six, the news of the death was announced through a statement posted on its social media accounts, which said: “It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our partner, sister, daughter and friend Jennifer Precious Finch.”

The statement added that Finch’s influence in the world of music was “tremendous”, and that her influence in the lives of those close to her was even greater, while thanking the public for the messages of support, and requesting that the family be given a special space to grieve in this difficult period.

Just 4 days ago, Finch revealed that she was suffering from aggressive brain cancer, after undergoing several surgeries in an attempt to deal with the complications of the disease.

She was scheduled to join her L7 bandmates on a farewell tour titled The Last Hurrah later in the year, but she announced that she was facing “serious complications” due to her health condition.

In a post that launched a GoFundMe donation campaign to help cover the costs of her care, those close to her said that doctors initially hoped that the treatment, including radiation, would give her a chance to return to a more normal life. But her condition later suffered a continuous series of setbacks and operations.

The publication explained that Finch now lives with major physical limitations, and needs a level of care that love, friendship, and persistence alone cannot provide around the clock.

A large number of rock stars and fans, including members of the band Garbage, Kathleen Hanna of Bikini Kill, and Jeff Ament of Pearl Jam, interacted with the campaign in an attempt to help the campaign reach its goal of $350,000.

Despite the health crisis, Finch appeared in good spirits in photos shared by her loved ones from inside the hospital, where she appeared displaying the effects of surgeries with a clear smile.

Her bandmates, Donita Sparks, Susie Gardner, and Dimitra Plakas, said that the farewell tour had been planned with her when the four members were in good health and spirits, noting that Finch asked them to continue the tour as scheduled.

The band added in their statement: “Jennifer is part of our family. We love her, and we want her to feel all the strength of the community that has loved and supported her all these years.”

Finch had received widespread messages of support from her fans around the world, and the band later confirmed that she enjoyed hearing the messages read to her.

L7 are a prominent band in the grunge scene and riot grrrl movement of the 1990s, along with bands such as Nirvana and Bikini Kill.

The band achieved a wide audience presence in 1992 with the song Pretend We’re Dead, before later declining commercially and announcing an indefinite hiatus in 2001.

L7 returned to activity in 2014, and since then it has continued to give concerts and tours in the United States, Europe, Britain, and Australia.

With Finch’s departure, rock music loses one of its solid female faces of the 1990s, and an artist known not only for her playing, but also for her presence, personality, and influence on an entire generation of alternative rock fans.
