The UAE sends 70 tons of humanitarian aid to Venezuela in support of those affected by the two earthquakes

Caracas, July 20, 2017 – The UAE, as part of its urgent humanitarian response to meet the most urgent needs of those affected by the two earthquakes that occurred in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, and through the Emirates International Aid Agency and in coordination with the UAE Embassy in Caracas, sent to the Bolivarian government in Venezuela, 70 tons of relief materials and various humanitarian supplies.

The humanitarian aid provided included: Medical supplies, tents and shelter supplies, which contribute to mitigating the humanitarian effects of the disaster, in addition to enhancing the ability of the competent authorities to respond to the urgent needs of those affected.

The UAE aid plane was received in the presence of a number of senior officials from the Emirati and Venezuelan sides, including Her Excellency Andrea Corrao, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for Asia and the Middle East, and Andre Romero, Deputy Minister of Industrial and Commercial Development at the Ministry of the People’s Authority for Industry and Trade, along with a number of relevant officials.

His Excellency Dr. Tariq Ahmed Al Ameri, President of the Emirates International Aid Agency, stressed that this aid comes as an extension of the UAE’s established approach to rapid response to humanitarian crises, indicating that it will contribute to meeting the most urgent needs, especially in the shelter and health sectors, by providing shelter materials to those affected and the medical supplies necessary to support the treatment of the injured, which contributes to accelerating early recovery efforts and alleviating the suffering of those affected.

For her part, Alexandra Hernandez, Deputy Minister of Health in Venezuela, confirmed that the UAE was the first country to provide this type of medicine and medical supplies within the current response, as they were provided in accordance with the specifications and requirements set by the Ministry, praising the speed of the UAE response and its role in supporting the health sector and meeting its urgent needs.

She pointed out the possibility of the need for additional support during the next stage, according to the development of the situation and the continued repercussions of the two earthquakes.

As part of the field follow-up, Emirates International Aid Agency teams continue to carry out field visits to the most affected areas in the state of La Guaira to assess the extent of the damage and humanitarian needs, in addition to periodic visits to storage and installation sites for tents and medical warehouses in the capital, Caracas, to follow up on the progress of aid distribution operations and ensure their implementation according to the highest quality standards and in line with best practices in the field of international humanitarian relief.
