Hundreds were forced to leave their homes. Fires sweep through southern France

Local authorities in the Var region in southern France reported on Wednesday that forest fires broke out in the region yesterday and were moving quickly, causing the destruction of 2,500 hectares and forcing 400 people to flee their homes.

William Vogel, spokesman for firefighters in the region, said: “The situation is very difficult. About 1,100 firefighters remained working throughout the night,” according to Reuters.

The spokesman stated that the fires had not been extinguished as of Wednesday morning, but the winds were expected to be “more favourable” today, despite the high temperatures.
